Palomo Spain is having the best day ever. Aside from Beyonce’s one-month old twins, Sir Carter and Rumi – who made their official debut on Instagram on Friday – this budding young brand – which shows on the New York Fashion Week calendar – is the noteworthy fashion takeaway from the singer’s announcement photo.
Beyonce’s choice of wardrobe for what will undoubtedly become one of the most-liked photos on Instagram makes it so that the Palomo Spain name will be on everyone’s minds and Google searches today. Launched in 2015 after now-25-year old designer Alejandro Gómez Palomo’s graduation from the London College of Fashion, Palomo’s menswear brand centers on his “tireless search of the best textiles, the patience and perseverance of his craftsmen, the continuous supervision for the most loyal representation of his ideas.”
“It’s the only piece I’ve ever made like that,” said Palomo over an early morning phone call between New York and the Iberian Peninsula. “It is vintage silk organza from a really old couture textile shop in Córdoba, Spain, which is near where I live. It is circa either the 1950s or the 1960s. I thought, Oh my God, I am so in love with this fabric. It had a midcentury quality—but we changed that. It’s exquisite… and I can never find it again, of course,” he told Vogue.
“It’s a gown now that almost has the shape of a big fur coat—sleeved and open,” says Palomo, who was a short-list nominee for this year’s LVMH Prize.
Beyoncé placed a personal order for the dress after being sent loaner samples. Palomo and his team took her measurements, tailored the piece, and sent it back. But then, she got pregnant. “We thought, OK, she won’t wear it, oh well,” Palomo further stated. That obviously was not the case.
