LVMH is said to be looking to fill a soon to be vacant creative director position at Céline, as creative director Phoebe Philo is looking for an out, per Vogue Australia. However, the Paris-based conglomerate has denied that Philo’s departure will be taking place any time soon. “According to multiple sources, the design team is preparing for Philo’s eventual exit from the French fashion powerhouse brand by interviewing designers to take her place for when the impending time comes,” writes Vogue.
Although the brand denies Philo’s imminent departure, they have not denied that interviews for her replacement have been underway. “We categorically deny any imminent departure of Phoebe Philo from Céline,” according to a spokesman for LVMH.
Vogue Australia cites BoF, in stating: “Industry sources said potential replacements for Philo could include former Stella McCartney design director Natasa Cagalj, who is now at Ports 1961 and has a similar aesthetic.” Other proposed names included Michael Rider, design director of Céline ready-to-wear, as well as Ilaria Icardi, the design director at Victoria Beckham who was previously senior design director at YSL and Céline.
Rumors regarding Philo’s future have been swirling for years. As of now, she has been at the helm of Céline for almost ten years, helping to turn the Paris-based brand from a quiet label to a highly in-demand source for garments and accessories, as well as inspiration for fast fashion brands and fellow high fashion labels, as well.
UPDATED (December 22, 2017): LVMH announced today that Phoebe Philo would be stepping down as the creative director of Céline after ten years at its helm.
